| The New Circus was born in Europe in the 70s. This trend has changed the traditional circus by introducing more theatrical proposals and by incorporating other arts into it, as dance and music. Le Cirque du Soleil, Canadian company with seven troupes travelling through the world, is the best representative of this revival.
At the beginning of the 90s the concern rose among artists of the New Circus to turn some of their activities to the rescue of children and adolescents in social hazard by means of the experience of circus. First in this social vocation was the project Se essa Rua fosse Minha, created in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. In accordance with this example, the Canadian fundation Jeunesse du Monde and Le Cirque du Soleil launched in 1995, in several countries, circus workshops, in a programme called El Circo del Mundo.
At the same time, a group of Chilean artists, concerned by the development of marginal areas, received the support of those institutions to allow El Circo del Mundo to take off.
In April 1995 a group of Chilean artists received the support of Jeunesse du Monde and Le Cirque du Soleil to start a small project which has become today El Circo del Mundo - Chile. | | |
